WHAT HAPPENED
Kolkata Metro will run a traffic and power block on the Blue Line between Netaji and Mahanayak Uttam Kumar stations on Sunday, 1 November, from 9 am to 6 pm. There will be no service between Shahid Khudiram and Maidan during the block, while trains will run between Dakshineswar and Maidan, with the first train at 9 am from Dakshineswar and 9:15 am from Maidan. Full service is set to resume after 6 pm, subject to the work finishing on time.
WHY IT MATTERS
For about nine hours, riders at the southern end of the Blue Line lose their metro link to the city centre. The Yellow Line (Noapara to the airport) and the Green Line will run normally, but there will be no direct trains between Jai Hind Bimanbandar and Dakshineswar. The Purple and Orange Lines stay shut, as they are every Sunday.
EXPERT VIEW
Daytime Sunday blocks are the right choice for this kind of work, since weekend ridership is lighter and overnight windows leave little time for heavy jobs. The 6 pm restart is conditional, so a late resumption is a real possibility, and the clearest test is whether full Blue Line service is running again by 7 pm on Sunday. We expect Kolkata Metro to announce at least one more Sunday block on this stretch within the next two months if this round is part of a larger job. Confidence: low.
WHAT YOU SHOULD DO
If you start your journey south of Maidan on Sunday, plan a bus, auto or cab to Maidan, or travel after 6 pm. If you are heading to the airport from Dakshineswar, allow extra time for a change of trains, since direct services will not run. Check Kolkata Metro’s official channels on Sunday afternoon before you set out.
